Tooling
AMSC has always designed and built its own tooling to support its manufacturing. Our
familiarity and expertise in the process of building and qualifying tooling has provided
an advantage.
Our customers today are benchmarking tooling prices against quotes they receive from India,
Thailand, and China, where these countries are considered to be leading cost countries(LCC).
We have purchased tooling from India, Thailand and China for the past years. We have set
up a LCC Division within AMSC responsible for the global outsourcing of tooling and possible
parts. Once the jobs are awarded offshore, AMSC engineers who are based out in Asia micro
manage the process of all the jobs. AMSC engineers report daily back to Canada on the build
progress and this has been a key to our success on eliminating any engineering and timing
issues.
We currently have approximately 20 qualified tooling sources and to date have successfully built
approximately 50 tools in Asia.
